Test Sieve Calibration & Inspection Guide

Test sieves are measuring devices: the condition and opening characteristics of the sieve cloth directly affect particle-size results. A laboratory quality system should therefore define how sieves are identified, inspected, verified and replaced. This guide explains the terminology used by current ASTM references without claiming that every laboratory needs the same inspection interval.

Inspection, calibration sieve and performance verification are different

ASTM E11-24 specifies technical requirements for woven-wire sieve cloth, test-sieve construction, frame sizes and inspection procedures. ASTM describes three sampling confidence levels for sieve cloth: Compliance, Inspection and Calibration. The Calibration level uses a larger sampling basis; ASTM notes that a calibration sieve has at least twice as many openings measured as an inspection sieve.

ASTM E2427-22 is a separate performance-based acceptance method. It compares an E11 test sieve with an inspection or calibration sieve using reference material to assess performance and long-term reliability. ASTM specifically states that this performance test is not a replacement for E11 inspection procedures.

What should be checked before a sieve is used?

  • Confirm the sieve identity, aperture designation and applicable standard.
  • Inspect the frame and sieve cloth for visible damage, distortion or loose attachment.
  • Check for blocked openings, contamination or material retained from previous testing.
  • Confirm that the sieve is appropriate for the test method and sample.
  • Record any verification, inspection or certificate information required by the laboratory quality procedure.

How often should test sieves be inspected?

There is no single generic interval suitable for every laboratory. Frequency should be based on the applicable test method, quality system, usage rate, sample abrasiveness, cleaning practices and any evidence of damage or result drift. A sieve used heavily with abrasive material may require more frequent checks than one used occasionally with a clean, non-abrasive sample.

What to specify when ordering a test sieve

Provide the required aperture, applicable standard, frame diameter, frame material, sieving-media material and any inspection or certificate requirement stated by your method or quality system. Do not order on a generic mesh number alone where formal compliance matters.
