Sieve Shaker Selection Guide

A sieve shaker should be selected around the test method and sieve stack, not simply by motor size or appearance. The right setup depends on the sample, sieve diameter, number of sieves, required motion and the level of repeatability expected from the laboratory procedure.

1. Start with the test method

Check whether the applicable procedure specifies a particular sieving action, duration, sieve type or equipment configuration. Equipment selection should support the method rather than change it.

2. Confirm sieve diameter and stack capacity

Measure the frame diameter and determine how many sieves, lids and receiver pans must be clamped at one time. A shaker that cannot securely hold the required stack can produce inconsistent operation.

3. Match the motion to the application

Common laboratory designs use gyratory, vibratory or combined tapping/sieving actions. Different motions can move particles through a sieve bed differently, so laboratories should maintain a consistent method when results need to be compared.

4. Consider the sample

Particle shape, density, abrasiveness, tendency to agglomerate and sample mass influence sieving behaviour. Fine powders may behave differently from coarse aggregate or soil, and some methods require washing or other preparation before the mechanical sieving stage.

5. Look for control and repeatability

A timer and repeatable operating settings help a laboratory apply the same procedure from test to test. The required control level depends on the governing method and internal quality procedure.

6. Check clamping, maintenance and workspace

Consider how quickly the stack can be secured, whether moving parts are accessible for maintenance, the available bench/floor space and the working environment. Stable mounting is important for consistent operation.
