ASTM E11
The current active ASTM reference is ASTM E11-24, Standard Specification for Woven Wire Test Sieve Cloth and Test Sieves. ASTM states that it covers sieve cloth, test-sieve construction, frame sizes and inspection procedures, with nominal apertures from 125 mm down to 20 µm.
ISO 3310
ISO 3310-1:2016 specifies technical requirements and test methods for test sieves of metal wire cloth. ISO lists its applicable aperture range as 125 mm down to 20 µm and notes that this edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2022.
Do ASTM and ISO sieve numbers always match?
No. A laboratory should not rely on a name or mesh number alone. The safest approach is to specify the actual aperture opening and the standard that applies to the test. This is especially important where results need to be comparable across laboratories or accepted under a regulated test method.
